I installed GeoDisk 2 on my Win98 SE desktop. The first time I ran it, it informed me that I needed to restart my computer to finish updating files. I did that. The next time I tried to run it, it just sat there and did nothing visible. I tried both the scandisk and the defrag option separately. I could see my hard drive reading faintly (light flashing dimly), but no evidence that anything else was happening. I thought maybe I was being too impatient, so I went away for about 5 minutes and came back. Still no visible evidence that anything was going on. The tasks in the sys tray were still there (I ran my mouse over them). And when I checked my running tasks, nothing had been closed. Geodisk was listed among those tasks.
Any ideas? I like the concept behind this software and it seems to fit my needs, if I can only get it to work.
I appreciate any and all help.
Oh.....I did try a repair installation. No change. I then uninstalled and reinstalled it. No change. Exact same message as first time, and then no response.

Elaine, I'm experiencing the same type of problem, although mine stops working after closing all processes. At this point I get "not responding". I thought I may have fixed it by repairing via the add/remove function but no such luck. It worked, albeit very slowly, for one session only. It's frustrating because I had the original GEODisk and it worked without problems. It's possible that I may have created this particular problem when I uninstalled the original in order to install GEODisk2. I recall after uninstalling, I searched for any remnants and simply deleted what was left. Bindar is aware but was unable to replicate my scenario on his computer before leaving on a trip. I suspect he'll look into it upon his return

Dan, Thanks for the response. I'll be patient. I would really like for this program to work. I would love to be able to let my drive defrag overnight and shut itself down. That's the only problem with the large drives. It takes forever to defrag!

Hi There Elaine and Dan. I will have a chance to look at this problem in the next few days so I need some info from you. This may be a problem wih closing a particular proces (since some don't like to be closed) so I need to know what you normally have running. My first suspects would be Anti-virus and firewalls. Please post back what apps you have installed and I will see what I can do. I may alsohave to remove the code that kills and restarts Explorer.exe. That solution creates another very small annoyance but no problems per se.

Hello. I tried your program again and it will clean the recycle bin, but won't set up for the scan disk or defrag. I am running ez antivirus, but no firewall. All the items in my task program list are: smartclock.exe (a desktop clock), explorer, vettray, vetmsg9x (both of these are ez antivirus), enlite (a personal information manager), em_exec stimon, Ltmoh (modem on hold), systray, Hpsjvxd, and transparentd ( a small program to make my desktop icon name background transparent.)
This is on Win98SE. AMD XP2100+ processor, 512 M Ram, 60 Gig hard drive. Also, I found an older version of your program, and it worked fine on my machine. I really wanted the shutdown feature though, so I would like to be able to get this one running.
If you need any more information, just let me know. Thanks Elaine

I just remembered. Don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I did put my antivirus software "to sleep" before running you program at one point. It didn't make any difference.

Hi Elaine, Just to let you know that George is out of town right now on business, and can't even get an internet connection very often, but he'll certainly get your message. This is a topsy-turvy time of the year for him right now, but you are not being forgotten. Curt

Elaine As Curt indicated, Bindar is off earning a living, however as I indicated earlier, I had a similar problem and after some troubleshooting, the culprit appears to be AVAST!, my AV program. You may want to check yours out from that perspective. Simply disable your AV program from the startup menu in MSCONFIG (Start/Run and type in MSCONFIG click on startup tab and remove checkmarks for your AV program). Run GEODisk. If it runs, then you know what the problem is, so inform Bindar and I'm confident he will write a fix. By the way don't forget to go back in and re-insert the checkmarks for the AV program. Dan

Thanks for the responses. I'm really not in a big hurry. I know this can be a relaxing time of the year for some folk, and they should take advantage of it while they can!
I did disable my anti-virus, restarted, and tried to run a scandisk. It still didn't work. If you need any more information when you get around to troubleshooting it, I'll be happy to provide whatever I can. I know the more information you have, the easier it is to find what the problem was.

You might try uninstalling a Microsoft patch KB891711, and then try running Geodisk2 again.... This cause similar problems on my unit.... Apparently this patch runs evertime you start win98.... if this cures it, then only couple of options... dont reinstall this critical update.... or shut it down prior to running Geodisk2 ( run msconfig.exe and unselect it from starting), wait to see if microsoft updates this patch due to their coding problems, or possibly wait till geodisk's author recodes the software to cure the problem?

I never installed KB891711, and it's not anywhere on my computer that I can find. I checked files, and ran hijack this to see all the start up files and running processes. So I can't blame it on this patch.
