 anti-virus software

George, could you comment on Avast versus AVG? I have Avast, and find it perfectly satisfactory. A lot of people swear by AVG. What do you think?

Hi,
I'm not George, and he is out of town for a bit. In the interim I'll just say I believe George likes Avast (I think better than AVG, which I use), but if you can be patient, I know George will respond in-depth on this when he gets back.
And BTW, welcome to this forum, I want to see this one flourish.

I'm just popping in and out when I get the chance these days. I like both programs and they seem to prform equally however I did have to do a bit more work getting Avast working properly. I do not recommend using the Email scanner though. If it thinks it has found a viral attachment it will change the server to 127.0.0.1 which of course is local host so you have to reset that each time. Just save your attachments and then scan them. The only problem I have with AVG is a recent dispute about support. I can understand the free version not being supported, but when there was a recent problem with updates they should have at least answered queries on that point.

Thanks to Curt and George. As an afterthought: Since I understand that viruses can come in in the main body by means of webbugs and other things, wouldn't be better to keep the e-mail scan, and just put up with the re-programming required? Also, is this intentional, or an error? Should I write to Avast and ask that they correct this?

XE306, I too use Avast and have no problems whatsoever. With regards to e-mail scanning, everything I've read suggests it's a waste of time and resources. However I'm paranoid and I haven't disabled that feature yet. As a matter of fact, I was awaiting George's return to start this discussion, primarily because of his expertise, but also because this is new, and I didn't want the discussion to end prematurely because of "lack of hits".

Dan, Yesterday I had three e-mails all with viruses which came in at the same time. My filter marked them as spam, and Avast isolated and killed them all, presumably from the scanner. Unless George says otherwise, I'm going to keep the scanner going.

XE306
I hear you. As I said, I too have Avast scanning my e-mails just to be safe, even though most experts imply it's not necessary.
I look forward to having an "objective" discussion upon George's return.

I had a pop-up notice from Avast today that said my automatic update service was about to expire. What does this mean? I thought it was free. Anybody know?

Hi xe306,
I don't use Avast, so I had to go to their site, and check things out.

It appears that when you first install Avast, you have 60 days to use it for free, during which time you must register on-line to get a registration number (it may have been called something else). After that you can use it for a year, after which time you simply re-register on-line.
See here: http://www.avast.com/i_idt_226.html
Does that answer your question?
